Bike Expo New York

I'm excited to be speaking at this year's Bike Expo New York, the largest consumer bike expo in the United States. (It's FREE and open to the public.) Timed to lead into the already sold-out TD Five Boro Bike Tour, the expo focuses on urban cycling, New York style. During this two-day event, visitors can hear Mountain Biking Basics, the Confessions of a Recumbent Bicyclist, and How To Fix a Flat, among many other things. I'll be telling tales of female bicycle racers, reformers, and reactionaries from the Gilded Age. Come hear me on Day 2 of the Expo, May 4, 2013, at 1 p.m. in BE NY Learning Zone 1. The Expo will take place at Pier 36, 299 South Street, Basketball City, New York (along the East River at South Street and Montgomery Street).

Me and the Rollergirls

Some of you may know I've been working on a nonfiction picture book about Roller Derby in 1948. (Look for it in Spring 2014, with illustrations by the wonderful Matt Collins.) That makes me all kinds of thrilled about the appearance I'll be making for Women's History Month at Bergen Community College in Paramus, NJ, on Monday, March 25. I'll be taking part in a sports history presentation along with two members of the Garden State Rollergirls, among other guests. I cannot wait to meet Lil Miss Kamakaze and Don't Care Bear. Maybe they can suggest a Roller Derby name for me.

If you're in the area, the talk will be from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in room C325 of the Pitkin Education Center.

Tireside Chat

On Sunday, March 10, 2013, I'll be giving a Women's History Month "Tireside Chat" at the United States Bicycling Hall of Fame in Davis, California. If you're in the area, come hear about the impact that the bicycle had on American popular culture in general and women's lives in particular just before the turn of the 20th century. I can't imagine a better setting. The fun starts at 2 p.m.
