Bike Lust and All That

August 18, 2011

Check out my article on "The Devil's Advance Agent," i.e., the bicycle's impact on women in the 1890s, in the October 2011 issue of American History magazine, which is on newsstands now despite the cover date. There's also a sidebar, cleverly titled "Bike Lust" by the editor, in which I address concerns that riding a bike would sexually excite women a bit more directly than I did in Wheels of Change. Sorry to say the article's not online, but if you read a hard copy of the magazine you'll enjoy the fading thrill of flipping pages and the dying art of using a table of contents.

The bicycle has undergone continual adaptation and improvement since its inception. These innovations have continued with the advent of modern materials and computer aided design, allowing for a proliferation of specialized bicycle types. Thanks.
